Professor Abel Gbenga
Fakuade was born on 22nd January, 1956, at Omuo Ekiti State of Nigeria.
He started his primary education at St. Mary's Catholic Primary School
in 1963 and completed it at the Baptist Primary School Oyin Akoko, Ondo
State in 1968. He was admitted into Ajuwa Grammar School Oke-agbe Akoko
in 1969.
Having got a Division
I1 in West African School Certificate in 1973, he qualified to be
admitted for Higher School Certificate at the Polytechnic Ibadan where
he came out in flying colours in 1976 and immediately got admitted at
the University of Ibadan to study English Language, the same year.
As a young and
purposeful undergraduate, he was among the few students that graduated
with Second Class Upper Division in English Language in 1979. Prof.
Fakuade was posted to School of Preliminary Studies, Keffi in the then
Plateau State for his National Service. Due to his dedication to duty,
he was retained as a permanent staff after the service year and granted
study fellowship to pursue a masters degree in English Language -
Stylistics, a task he accomplished in 1983. Between 1983 and 1986, he
rose to the rank of Lecturer I.
In January 5, 1987,
however, Professor Fakuade, out of the desire to become a University
don, joined the services of Modibbo Adama College, University of
Maiduguri now Federal University of Technology, Yola.
In 1989 he was
awarded study fellowship of the Federal University of Technology, Yola
for a Ph.D. programme in Linguistics at the University of Ilorin. A task
he could not accomplish until January 1997 due to series of prolonged
strikes embarked upon by ASUU.
His qualifications
include West African School Certificate 1973, Higher School Certificate
1976, B.Ed. English (Ibadan) 1979, M.A. English - Stylistics (Ibadan)
1983, Ph.D. Linguistics (lIorin) 1997, and Certificate in Teaching,
Description and Learning of English (University of Essex, Colchester
England) 1990.
A distinguished
scholar he has bagged the following scholarships, fellowships and
awards: Ondo State Bursary Award 1974-1976, Federal Government
Scholarship Award 1976-1979, School of Preliminary Studies Fellowship
Award 1982-1983, Federal University of Technology, Yola. Fellowship
Award 1989-1995, The British Council Scholarship Award 1990.
Professor Fakuade has
been External Examiner to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria 2001-date,
Editorial Consultant to Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural
Development, Clevedon, England, 1996-date, Editiorial Consultant to

Professor Fakuade has

Professor Fakuade had published 31 articles in International and Local
Journals and at least 5 books in different areas of English studies. He
had also presented several papers at Conferences/ Seminar/Workshops. He
has successfully supervised 10 Masters Students in English for Specific
Purposes (ESP) and has some Ph.D. Students under his tutelage.
He is a member of
Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN), Member of Royal Society of
Academy Ibadan (RSA) and Member of Nigeria English Studies Association.
A dedicated scholar,
Professor Fakuade had served as Sabbatical Professor of English Language
in the University of Maiduguri.
Professor Fakuade is
married and has three children. |
